"After planning the trip for 2 years we were finally at Old Oaks Lake. We decided to not fish the first night and find our spots and bait up ready for first thing Sunday morning to rest the swims, I was starting to see big fish roll over my baited spots but had nothing until Monday evening, first fish was a 43lb 3oz mirror, and then another in the night, 43lb 11oz mirror. All then went very quiet.

The weather conditions were totally against us with freak rain storms and rivers running through the front of the bivvy, chopping and changing all the time and it looked like the fish wanted to try and spawn as I saw a few fish on numerous occasions grouping up when walking around the lake right up in the margins.

Then finally Wednesday conditions turned for the best. It started to kick off with a 40lb 14oz mirror, 34lb 11oz mirror, 38lb 4oz mirror.

I then noticed some major feeding bubbles 20ft away from my left spot, as with all the spots I trickled in bait little but often but started to pay attention to this bubbling area a bit more, every hour a bit more and then put a rig on it.

Then all of a sudden my reel was screaming like never before, I knew the lake holds some big fish but I could tell this was an absolute lump. 15 minutes later after a battle I've never had before I caught a glimpse of it, massive golden scales and the longest, widest common I've ever seen and knew straight away it was the Long Common. My heart started to jump out of my body as I knew this was the big one and the next few minutes were the longest in my life.

I have then finally slipped the beast into the landing net and have then realised I have just caught a fish of a lifetime. I have never smiled so hard, the adrenaline pumping and total disbelief that I have actually landed the Long Common at 69lb 12oz and a new lake record. All the hard work has paid off and what a reward.

What was strange was we fished Old Oaks 3 years previously on the same week and my mate who took the pictures also had it on the wednesday which was the same day at 66lb.

The lake then went very quiet again for the rest of the week and i only managed one more in the night on Friday, 34lb 3oz grassy. All in all a very hard weeks fishing trying everything to nick an extra bite but a very rewarding week.

I would like to say a big thank you to Ash from Tails Up for providing top quality bait with the OCM and Pro Seed doing the business."
